A highlighter or lip balm for your vagina? A gynecologist explains how to use vulva cosmetics safely, and we test out a few products
“Wash your intimate area with lukewarm water only!” Doctors and gynecologists have been urging us to do this for years. And yet, vulva care products are on the rise. Seems like a bit of a contradiction, doesn’t it? Not really, says gynecologist Karolien Stevens. Editor Liesbeth: To be honest, even after all that research, I’m still skeptical. It’s no secret that the beauty industry uses fancy talk to sell us stuff. But are these products really that great? According to gynecologist Stevens, using them with caution can’t hurt, so I decide to order four products online.
The first thing you notice is that every item comes in stylish packaging. It’s as if they’re saying, “You can proudly display these jars and tubes in your bathroom cabinet without blushing. Seriously, there’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.” When I unpack everything, my cat (a real one, not you-know-what) comes over to sniff around curiously. Still, it’s a relief that this unusual skincare experiment won’t lead to a fiasco—aka a yeast infection.

shinncare intimate oil spray shinncare a Belgian product developed by a team of gynecologists and pharmacists. At first, I wasn’t convinced: it feels a bit strange to spray something on my vulva, and the product feels sticky and greasy. But it actually works. Even during the hottest days of the year, my well-groomed bikini line remains noticeably free of irritation or red bumps.*

*Tip from the shinncare: To avoid a sticky or greasy feeling, use the intimate oil spray Comfort sparingly. This dry oil absorbs quickly into the skin, but for a comfortable feeling, spray 2 to 3 times, rub the product in, and let it soak in for a moment.
